Officer in Maryland beating to serve home detention

UPPER MARLBORO, Md. — A judge has sentenced a former police officer to 30 days of home detention for beating a University of Maryland student during a rowdy celebration following a Terrapin basketball victory over Duke.
The judge sentenced James Harrison on Friday to a year in jail on the assault conviction. He then suspended all but 30 days and ordered Harrison to serve those through home detention. Harrison had been a Prince George’s County officer.
He was one of two officers charged with assaulting John McKenna. Another student captured the 2010 assault on video. The other officer was acquitted in October. Harrison had served as a policeman for more than 20 years.
Harrison’s lawyer says he’ll file a motion asking the judge to remove Harrison’s conviction from his record.
