Hundreds attend Jonesboro vigil for Connecticut shooting victims

By The Associated Press

This article was published December 18, 2012 at 7:35 a.m.

— Several hundred people turned out for a candlelight vigil in Jonesboro to mourn the victims of the Connecticut school shooting rampage.

The Jonesboro Sun reported that Monday night’s vigil largely focused on the 20 children and six staff members killed at the elementary school nearly 1,200 miles away in Newtown, Conn.

Jonesboro Mayor Harold Perrin said there’s now “an unfortunate kinship” between the communities.

Nearly 15 years ago, four students and a teacher were killed by two boys at Westside Middle School in Jonesboro.

Several hundred teddy bears and other toys were taken to the vigil. Organizers say they’ll be sent to Newtown on Wednesday.

Pam Herring, whose daughter was killed in the Westside shooting, says teddy bears were given to students after the Jonesboro shootings, and some still cherish them.
