Obama 'actively supportive' of assault weapons ban

— The White House said President Barack Obama is "actively supportive" of efforts on Capitol Hill to reinstate an assault weapons ban.

Obama has long backed the ban, but has failed to push for it throughout his first term. Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., plans to introduce legislation to reinstate the ban early next year.

White House spokesman Jay Carney said Obama would also support legislation to close the gun show "loophole," which allows people to buy guns from private dealers without background checks.

The president has pledged to address gun violence in the coming weeks following Friday's deadly shooting at a Connecticut elementary school.

Obama spoke Tuesday with West Virginia Sen. Joe Manchin, a conservative Democrat and avid hunter who is now supportive of a national discussion on preventing gun violence.

No surprise here. But making gun ownership all but completely illegal hasn't worked out so well in Obama's hometown. Besides losing the argument at the Supreme Court, the 2012 count of shootings in gun-free Chicago is 517 because (guess what) the bad guys don't obey the law. I have news for him. If he gets the gun control he wants... most of the good guys won't obey the law either.

I love it. The same government that deliberately gave semiautomatic rifles to the Mexican drug cartels is now going to try to tell me that I can't have them anymore.
