LITTLE ROCK Two drivers were killed Monday after a truck's trailer became disconnected and crossed into opposing traffic, striking both of their vehicles, authorities said.
It happened about 6:40 a.m. on Arkansas 95 about two miles north of Interstate 40 in Conway County.
Arkansas State Police say the 2006 Freightliner driven by Jeremy Hobbs, 36, of Lavaca, was heading north on the highway when the trailer disconnected and went into the southbound lanes.
According to a preliminary report, it struck a 1985 Chevy pickup driven by 43-year-old Morrilton resident Kevin Whitbey and a 1996 Lincoln driven by 24-year-old Springfield resident Rogelio Morales. The pickup overturned, and the Lincoln crashed into a ditch. Both drivers died from unspecified injuries.
The report did not specify what caused the trailer to disconnect from the truck. Hobbs was not injured.
There have been 525 fatalities on Arkansas roads so far this year, according to preliminary figures from state police.
