Jonesboro police investigate counterfeit cash

By The Associated Press

This article was published December 19, 2012 at 3:03 p.m.

— Police in Jonesboro say counterfeit $20 bills are circulating in the area — including one a child tried to use to pay for a school field trip.

Police said the fake bills have turned up at convenience stores, fast food restaurants and an elementary school where a student tried to use one to pay $4 for a field trip.

No arrests have been made.

Craighead County Sheriff’s Investigator Justin Rolland told The Jonesboro Sun that the counterfeiters are using a process in which legitimate $1 and $5 bills are illegally converted into $20, $50 and $100 bills.

Rolland said the process involves removing the ink from the real bill and copying the larger denomination bill onto the paper.
