JONESBORO — Plans to close Weiner High School are still valid, but a Harrisburg School Board vote has delayed the process.
Board members voted 4-1 on Monday to close the school.
But the law requires a unanimous vote to shutter the campus, which is now in the Harrisburg district. Officials say the next step is to take up the matter with the state Education Board.
Once the former Weiner School District fell below 350 students in 2010, the district had to dissolve. The district in northeast Arkansas proposed a unique but unsuccessful plan to survive by attempting to administratively consolidate with the Delight School District in southwest Arkansas.
The Jonesboro Sun reported that Harrisburg Superintendent Danny Sample wants to close the Weiner campus at the end of this school year.
