— FOOTBALL Henry earns All-USA honor

Pulaski Academy senior tight end Hunter Henry has been named first team All-USA by USA Today.

Henry, 6-5, 240 pounds, caught 107 passes for 1,449 yards and 15 touchdowns this fall. A two-time Arkansas Democrat-Gazette All-Arkansas selection, Henry has orally committed to Arkansas.

The All-USA team was chosen by USA Today’s Jim Halley in consultation with high school coaches and recruiting analysts.

CAC adds assistant

Jordan Watson, a former standout wide receiver at Harding University, will be an assistant at Central Arkansas Christian next fall, Mustangs Coach Tommy Shoemaker said.

Watson will coach wide receivers and defensive linemen, beginning with spring practice in May, Shoemaker said.

Shoemaker said CAC, a Class 4A school, was one assistant short during the 2012 season.

Watson caught 131 passes for 2,019 yards and 18 touchdowns at Harding from 2007-2010. He signed with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats of the Canadian Football League in 2011.

  • Robert Yates Pope commits to Ouachita

Jonesboro wide receiver Ke’Vontae Pope has orally committed to Ouachita Baptist, Hurricane Coach Randy Coleman said.

Pope, 5-10, 175 pounds, caught 51 passes for 929 yards and 9 touchdowns this fall, helping Jonesboro reach the Class 6A playoff semifinals.

  • Robert Yates Laird resigns at Ruston

Billy Laird, who led Nashville to the Class AA state championship and a 15-0 record in 1996, resigned Thursday after nine seasons as coach at Ruston, La. Laird coached Nashville from 1992-2003, compiling a 130-34-1 record and taking the school to five state championship games. He will remain Ruston’s athletic director.
