ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — The man who has led the nation's nuclear security agency since 2007 says he's stepping down next month.
Tom D'Agostino announced he was leaving the National Nuclear Security Administration on Friday.
The NNSA funds and oversees work at Sandia and Los Alamos national labs in New Mexico. These research centers that employ about 20,000 people in the state.
The Albuquerque Journal reports D'Agostino has presided over a 20 percent increase in the agency's budget but also missteps that have raised questions about the agency's ability to carry out its national security mission.
His announcement came on the same day the NNSA ordered security stepped-up at the Los Alamos National Laboratory.
D'Agostino said he wants to spend more time with family and said periodic leadership change make organizations more healthy.
