Quapaw Quarter guild gets festive at Festivus

— There was no aluminum pole, and the airing of grievances and feats of strength were optional, but there was plenty of good food and holiday cheer at Festivus for the Best of Us on Dec. 11 at the Governor’s Mansion.

The theme of the second annual celebration by the Quapaw Quarter Association comes from a Seinfeld episode about George Costanza’s family tradition of Festivus, wherein, during dinner, family members took turns telling each other how someone in the family has hurt or disappointed them during the year. After the meal, the head of the household was pinned in a wrestling hold. A bare aluminum pole served as the Festivus symbol.

Guests were greeted by first lady Ginger and Gov. Mike Beebe. The evening included an extensive silent auction which included several paintings by John Kushmaul, prints by Richard DeSpain, a private concert by pianist Gio Antipolo and a variety of trips, gift certificates and signed books.

Event chairman was Tom Wittenberg; Lynn Hamilton serves as board chairman. Executive director is Rhea Roberts.

Proceeds from the event go toward the association’s historic preservation programs.
