Candy Cane Lane
POCAHONTAS — Today is the last day for the 29th annual Candy Cane Lane on Maple Street in Pocahontas. The street will be lined with candy canes and Christmas lights. Featured Artist Exhibit at Library
ASH FLAT — The Ash Flat Public Library will have the works of featured artist of the month Sue Ross on display at the library during December. Ross began painting in the early 1980s. Working in oils only, the artist’s main themes are old houses, homeplaces, barns and scenery around the area.

First Day Hike
POCAHONTAS — Davidsonville Historic State Park will be the site Jan. 1 for a free First Day Hike, beginning at the Trapper Lake Trailhead. Everyone from those with New Year’s resolutions to get in shape to experienced hikers is invited to participate in this kickoff to the new year. The hike, which will include an opportunity to learn more about nature and the park, is part of the nationwide First Day Hikes celebration. Pets can participate but must be leashed. History Hike
POWHATAN — There will be a guided tour of Powhatan Historic State Park at 1 p.m. Jan. 1. The tour will go along the banks of the Black River and give attendees the chance to learn about life in a 19th-century steamboat town. The activities are part of a nationwide First Day Hikes movement. The cost for the tour is $5 for adults and $3 for children ages 6-12. Children under 6 will be admitted free.
Grief Share Support Program
CABOT — The Grief Share Support Program will begin Jan. 5 and be held from

Driver Safety Course
SEARCY — The PrimeTimes of White County Medical Center will hold an AARP Driver Safety Course, taught by Bill Mizell, from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Jan. 10 in the Hubach Center. Those who attend are asked to arrive early to fill out paperwork for the course and to park behind the hospital off Moore Street. The cost is $12 for AARP members and $14 for nonmembers. Comfort Foods Cooking Class
MOUNTAIN VIEW — Ozark Folk Center State Park will hold a cooking class on comfort foods Jan. 12. Attendees will spend the day learning how to cook winter comfort foods such as stews, ham and beans, cornbread, dried fruit cobblers, Ozark pudding and Skillet cake. The dishes are representative of the staple meals for the early Ozarks homesteaders. The $30 fee for the class covers a lunch of the cooking-class results and copies of recipes. Embroidery Workshop
POCAHONTAS — For $15, attendees to Davidsonville Historic State Park can participate in an Introduction to Embroidery workshop on Jan. 19. This trip back in time will allow students to learn a variety of stitches and patterns. Attendees are asked to bring scrap fabric. POWHATAN — Powhatan Historic State Park will hold a beginner’s knitting workshop from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Jan. 19. The cost is $15 per person. BATESVILLE — The 2013 Batesville Area Chamber of Commerce Business Expo will be held Jan. 23 in the University of Arkansas Community College at Batesville’s Independence Hall.
