A break in time

— After the repetitive course of the year, there comes a single glorious pause, both commencement and fruition at once, when time is measured not by the hours on the clock but by feelings in the heart.

“Just for a few hours on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day,” ChristopherMorley wrote, “the stupid, harsh mechanism of the world runs down, and we permit ourselves to live according to untrammeled common sense, the unconquerable efficiency of good will.”

Once a year, one kind of time gives way to another. Today we’re on Christmas Time.
