Marshals Museum fundraising passes $10M mark

— The planned U.S. Marshals Museum in Fort Smith has reached $10 million in its fundraising drive, but still has to garner another $40 million to reach its $50 million goal.

Organizers said last week they had $10.2 million in hand, and they don't count money pledged until it arrives.

The Southwest Times Record reports that the planned museum is reaching out to people whose ancestors are connected with the Marshals Service, many of them in Arkansas and Oklahoma.

Organizers say Pat Norsworthy of Little Rock pledged $250,000. His grandfather is a former marshal.

The museum plans to begin a national fundraising campaign in the first quarter of 2013.

The facility is planned for Fort Smith's riverfront area, which the city is trying to develop as a visitor attraction.
