Beebe says National Guard helping ambulances

— Arkansas Gov. Mike Beebe dispatched members of the National Guard to help ambulance companies and county officials deal with emergencies that popped up as snow and ice fell.

Beebe said in an interview with The Associated Press on Wednesday that Humvees were used to transport EMTs, nurses and patients after governments said they were having problems as 10 inches or more of snow fell on most of Arkansas on Christmas afternoon and night.

State police are aiding motorists stuck on various highways behind jackknifed 18-wheelers.

The governor also said he has authorized the use of out-of-state linemen to deal with the thousands of power outages that have hit the state since Christmas morning.

The last remnants of the snowstorm were exiting northeastern Arkansas late Wednesday morning.
