Black Men of America fete guests, honorees

— The elegant ballroom of the Mosaic Templars Cultural Center was the setting Dec. 21 for the 100 Black Men of Greater Little Rock’s annual Christmas Gala.

Decked in festive attire, guests were greeted by chapter President John Miller, Vice President Brent Mitchell and other members. Guests also enjoyed hors d’oeuvres and libations and danced to the sounds of the William Staggers Band.

Honored during the evening were several members of the community for service under the organization’s four guiding ideals (called pillars): Sgt. Willie Davis of the Little Rock Police Department (mentoring); Brenda Bowles, an assistant superintendent of the Pulaski County Special School District (education); Kameelah Harris, ownerof WOW Fitness (health and wellness); and Oscar Washington, director of customer service for Entergy Arkansas (economic development).

The organization also honored the first graduating class of its 100 Black Men Mentor Academy. Mentees Carlos T. Young II, Shaquille Stiger and Xaivier Davis were presented certificates and several gifts.

100 Black Men of America is a national organization whose mission is to improve the quality of life within black communities and enhance educational and economic opportunities for black Americans. The Little Rock chapter has contributed more than 400 man-hours of community service in the greater Little Rock area this year.
