— Authorities in western Arkansas said a 23-year-old man has been arrested in the shooting death of a young woman.

Fort Smith Police spokesman Sgt. Daniel Grubbs said 21-year-old Aleya Criswell died Saturday after she was brought to a local hospital with a gunshot wound in her lower back.

Grubbs said 23-year-old Jonathan Louis Jackson is believed to have fired several shots into a vehicle where Criswell was sitting. Grubbs said the people in the vehicle brought her to the hospital immediately after the shooting.

Jackson was arrested and was being held at the Sebastian County Jail on a first-degree murder charge on Sunday. A jailer said he didn’t know whether Jackson has a lawyer.

Grubbs said both Criswell and Jackson are Fort Smith residents.
