EVELYN DUFFEY, 98, of Little Rock, died peacefully on Dec. 14,2012. Evelyn was the daughter of Norwegian immigrants and was born Oct. 30, 1914 in Chicago.

Prior to WWII, she was a writer and translator for Scandia, a Chicago-basedScandinavian newspaper. When the war started, all news was cut off from Scandinavia, and the paper folded. She loved that job, and applied at the dailies, but found only a college degree could get you hired. Experience was not wanted.

She met Arnold Duffey in night class at the American Academy of Art and later married him. He taught her the commercial art business, and they had a freelance business in downtown Chicago. The business thrived until the end of the war. The transition from wartime to peacetime industrial production lasted about a year, during which advertising took a nose dive, and a number of agencies went out of business, including theirs.

They had heard of a number of good jobs in Dallas, but Walt Disney Studios had just let a large number of artists go and all the good jobs were taken. On the way back north, they stopped in Little Rock, had a good offer, and stayed. Employed by Arkansas Printing and Lithograph, Evelyn Duffey was the first female art director in Little Rock. She also painted a series of 5’ by 7’ panels depicting the history of river transportation on the Arkansas River for Jack Trotter’s downtown River Museum. Time was too short to achieve the quality she wanted, but the panels were impressive. Her passions were art and reading. Her pastime was classic movies.

Evelyn leaves behind one daughter, Alison Patton; two grandchildren, Chris Patton and Elizabeth Henson; and three great-grandchildren, Jora, Kannon, and Jozi Henson.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Jan. 7, 2013 at First Lutheran Church at 8th and Rock Street in Little Rock. Memorials may be made to the Arkansas Arts Center.

CARPINTERIA, Calif. - Elizabeth“Beth” Anne De Noble, 1954-2012 of Carpinteria, Calif.

Beth passed away Dec. 18, 2012, surrounded by her supportive community who mourn the loss of her friendship here on earth, but celebrate her new found freedom and joy in finding peace with the Lord. Beth lived life as if she could “Dance as though no one is watching you, Love as though you had never been hurt before, Sing as though no one can hear you, Live as though heaven is on earth.” There is no doubt that she is now dancing and singing with gusto.

Beth was born with cerebral palsy, in Lubbock, Texas, on March 19, 1954. She grew up in Little Rock, Ark., with her family until the death of her father, Henry M. de Noble at which time she moved to Santa Barbara, Calif.

After graduating from Dos Pueblos High School, she took classes at Santa Barbara City College. She was a life-long learner, who amazed us all with her prodigious memory and ability to tackle modern technology. She has lived in Carpinteria independently since 1996.

Despite being fiercely independent, she valued her family, friendships, and her “chosen family” above all else. Beth and Phil Womble recently celebrated the 40th anniversary of their life partnership. They had an inspirational bond forged in mutual respect and love that “always protects, always trusts, always hopes and always perseveres” 1 Corinthians 13:7.

In addition to her father, she is preceded in death by her mother, Helen K. de Noble and nephew, Phillip B. de Noble. She is survived by her brothers, Keith (Edna) de Noble, Timothy (Anne) de Noble; and her sister, Deborah (Michael) Wilson; her nephews, Chris de Noble, Brett (Marisa) and Matthew Wilson, William, Henry and Harris de Noble; her niece and Goddaughter, Elizabeth (Matt) Ryther and niece Andrea (Eric) Flodberg; and three great-nephews and two great-nieces. She is also survived and was greatly supported by her “chosen family,” Maria “Blanca” Moria, and the staff at UCP and hermany devoted friends.

Beth was a larger than life, fire ball spirit that proved to be an inspiration to others. Her willingness to tackle life’s seemingly insurmountable challenges with gusto set an example. She found support and solace in her faith and joy in her friendships. Her determination and courage provided her with the tools to live life to its fullest potential.

A memorial service to celebrate her life will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 19, 2013 at Christ the King Episcopal Church, 5073 Hollister Avenue, Santa Barbara, Calif. 93160.

In lieu of flowers, donations “in memory of Beth De Noble” can be made to either: UCP Work Inc., 5464 Carpenteria Ave., Ste. B, Carpinteria, Calif. 93013 or Christ the King Episcopal Church, 5073 Hollister Ave., P.O. Box 6188, Santa Barbara, Calif. 93160.
