Arts Center announces collegiate exhibit

This article was published February 2, 2012 at 3:45 a.m.

— Artwork from the 25th annual CenturyLink Collegiate Art Exhibition and Competition will be on display at the River Valley Arts Center during February. Award winners will be announced and awards presented at the exhibit opening reception from 1-3 p.m. Sunday at the River Valley Arts Center, 1001 E. B St.

The art competition is one of the few annual statewide competitions targeting university fine-arts students.

“We expect about 60 entries for this popular exhibition and competition,” said Carole Tackett, Arts Center Visual Arts Committee chairwoman. “It is a great way for students to have a professional critique of their works, an opportunity to win a cash award or have their work purchased.”

The grand prize for the collegiate competition is $150 and an opportunity to exhibit in December at the River Valley Arts Center. The first-prize award is $100, second prize is $50, and third prize is $25. Honorable mention winners will receive a ribbon. CenturyTel sponsors this competition and the high-school competition and exhibitions. The works by high-school students will be on exhibit during March.

Sunday Funday is a feature held in the classroom at the same time as the reception to encourage young families with children to introduce them to art. After viewing the exhibit, young people are invited to make and take a craft item. A variety of materials and an instructor will be available for those who want instruction and assistance in creating a work of art.

The exhibits and receptions are free and open to the public. Family, friends, area residents, artists and art instructors are invited to attend to encourage and support these emerging artists.
