LR Zoo's sloth bear predicts early spring

Norton (right) is seen with another sloth bear, Thor, at the Little Rock Zoo.

— While those in Punxsutawney, Pa. watched their groundhog predict six more weeks of winter, the Little Rock Zoo had their own animal guessing on the weather to come.

The zoo's sloth bear predicted that spring would come early to the area, making the move by picking between two boxes of snacks — one labeled spring, the other winter — and sniffing out the 'spring' box.

Zoo General Curator Mark Shaw read Thor’s proclamation aloud after the sloth bear made his prediction, “Here ye, here ye, what do I see? An early spring is in store for thee. With the snort of my nose, winter will come to a close, and that sounds good to me.”

Punxsutawney Phil crawled back into his home on Thursday morning, thus predicting six more weeks of winter.
