First lady visiting LR Air Force Base

— First Lady Michelle Obama visits Little Rock Air Force Base today to announce the expansion of a pilot program started at the base in Jacksonville that improves food variety through anew acquisition process and redesign.

Little Rock Air Force Base privatized its food services last year, which resulted in service workers at the base’s dining facility and consolidated club transitioning from government employees with union benefits to contracted employees of a private defense contractor.

Obama arrives at 2 p.m. to visit with airmen and tour the dining facility as part of a three-day promotional tour spanning Arkansas, Iowa and Florida to promote her Let’s Move initiative against childhood obesity.

Pentagon officials say obesity is a national security issue.

About a quarter of entry-level candidates are too overweight to enter the military or make it through their first enlistment.
