Rabid bull dies in Boone County

A bull died this week after contracting rabies, the Arkansas Department of Health said.

The bull died near Everton in Boone County. A rabid skunk was found on a property near the bull in January, but the ADH does not know if that skunk transmitted the disease to the bull.

The ADH has determined that seven skunks around the state have had rabies this year. Skunks are the most common carriers of the disease in the state, it said.

Rabid cattle are rare, the ADH said, and the last report of a rabid cow in the state was in 2007 in Hempstead Country.
