LITTLE ROCK Every year I attend a work related retreat at the Winthrop Rockefeller Institute on Petit Jean Mountain. I’ve grown fond of the campus, and now I have another reason to visit, for from March 8-11, it’s hosting an event titled “Adventures in the Art of Filmmaking.”
And while the cost might at first seem daunting - the full package is $750 for single occupancy, $650 per person for double occupancy, and there are commuter and student rates (see below) - it includes not only lodging and meals for the four-day event but perhaps the most eclectic and robust collection of movie industry professionals ever gathered in Arkansas.
Scheduled sessions include:
“Women in Film,” with actress Lea Thompson, acting coach Sandra Seacat and director Joan Darling
Documentarian (and Little Rock Film Festival co-founder) Craig Renaud will discuss his award-winning work in “On the Front Lines of Film Journalism.”
Actor Robert Walden will analyze Elia Kazan’s masterpiece in “Genesis of American Film Acting: On the Waterfront.”
Darling will perform her one-woman show “How to Do Shakespeare: An Interactive Workshop.”
Producer Fred Roos (The Godfather: Part II, Apocalypse Now) will talk about what it takes to make great films in “Forty Years of Filmmaking.”
Thompson will be interviewed by her husband, director Howard Deutch, about her career in the panel discussion “Inside the Creative Process.”
Screenwriter Bill Svanoe will offer tips on creating a professional screenplay, and Deutch and Tony Drazan will explain the process from selling the script to shooting it.
There will also be a session on favorite scenes, and a chance for participants to prepare a scene and “audition” in front of the forum’s faculty, who will offer critiques.
Seacat will lead a workshop on using dreams to fuel creativity, and Darling heads another titled “Directing the Actor” in which student and professional actors will perform scenes.
If you’re unable to attend the entire four days, a day package is available for $450 and includes everything except lodging, while the university student package (a current student identification is required) discounts the full package to $500 and the day package to $250.
Individual panel discussions are $35 each. Meals each can be bought in advance: $10 per breakfast, $15 per lunch, and $35 per dinner.
