Down with love

Valentine’s Day is justly maligned, Bobby Ampezzan writes in Tuesday’s Style section.

All our other holidays have easy virtues to get behind. On Thanksgiving, we count our blessings. On July Fourth, we behave lawlessly with Chinese-made explosives (see, “independence”).

Valentine’s Day celebrates romantic love, and is it any wonder there are so many haters? On Valentine’s Day, while couples celebrate their love with lilies and sexy double entendres and his-and-her Bikram yoga class and Swedish massage, the rest of us come up with clever new names for Feb. 14, like “Half-Off Russell Stover Eve,” and if we’re bookish, we spend a moment reading the hagiography of St. Valentine or perhaps the Wikipedia page on the most famous St. Valentine’s Day of all, the “massacre.”
