Happy trails

The view of downtown Little Rock from the hill above the Audubon Arkansas Center is inspiring.
The view of downtown Little Rock from the hill above the Audubon Arkansas Center is inspiring.

AUDUBON CENTER Location:

The center in southeast Little Rock’s Granite Mountain area is at 4500 Springer Blvd., 1.1 miles south of East Roosevelt Road.

Length:

The Uplands Loop on the hill behind the center is an easy 0.78 miles and has a picnic area on top with an impressive view of the Little Rock skyline.

Main attractions:

The other trails on the 425 acres are just to the south in what used to be Gillam Park. They badly need attention and lack adequate blazes or signs. Venture off paved areas at the risk of getting lost. Or wet. Or both.

However, Audubon Arkansas is constructing impressive new trails that will lead to a variety of natural sights, including rare nepheline syenite glades.

Hazards:

Snakes and bugs in season.

Amenities:

Parking at the center. (Water and restrooms when it’s open.)

Dog, bike, tyke friendly?

Keep the dogs on a leash, the bikes at home, but let the kiddies romp up the hill to their hearts’ content.

Rating (out of five):

Know a good trail for a hike?
