— 100 YEARS AGO Feb. 13, 1912

An unidentified burglar effected an entrance to the office of the clerk of the Supreme Court in the old statehouse some time during Sunday night, opened the drawers in all the desks in the office, took out all the papers in them and scattered them over the floor. When the clerical force reached the office yesterday morning, they failed to discover anything of value that was missing. The only articles taken by the burglar were a 10-cent plug of tobacco from Deputy Clerk W.P. Sadler’s desk, a box of fudge from Carl Stevenson’s desk and a small screw driver from Deputy Clerk J.H. Campbell’s desk. The burglar is believed to be a tramp who has been in the habit recently of sleeping in one of the vacant offices inthe old building.

50 YEARS AGO Feb. 13, 1962

Widespread abuses of the truck-weight laws, especially around central Arkansas, and some lax performing on the part of the Weights and Standards Division of the State Police were revealed in an open hearing here yesterday. What threatened to be revelations of pay-offs and abuses by enforcement officers resulted in only two or three definite cases, but the fact that trucks are running overloaded all over the state showed up as fairly concrete evidence.

25 YEARS AGO Feb. 13, 1987

Maumelle residents, dissatisfied with the proposed Pulaski County Special School District’s student assignment plan, are proceeding with plans to open the Maumelle Community Academy for elementary students next fall. The residents are also continuing plans to intervene in the county school district desegregation lawsuit being tried by U.S. District Judge Henry Woods.

10 YEARS AGO Feb. 13, 2002

A state retirement system ordered Tuesday that work on its planned upscale retirement community not proceed beyond site preparation for the time being because projected costs now exceed $100 million. The Arkansas Teacher Retirement System board of trustees also ordered its real estate manager, Tom Ferstl of Little Rock, to conduct a study to determine whether the project should proceed or be terminated.
