LITTLE ROCK Former United States Surgeon General Joycelyn Elders was the keynote speaker at a gathering at Philander Smith College in honor of Daisy L. Gatson Bates.
Elders, a Philander Smith alumnus, was featured among several others that spoke at the school's inaugural World Day of Social Justice celebration, an day of observation put into effect by the United Nations.
During the event, the day was honored by a proclamation from the office of Governor Mike Beebe, ordaining the day to be Daisy Bates Day in Arkansas.
The day is being concentrated by Philander Smith this year to honor Bates, a leader during the integration of Little Rock Central high school by nine African-American students in 1957.
During her speech, Elders discussed Bates and her positive legacy not only in the Little Rock area, but on a national scale during a time that reflected negatively on Arkansas as a whole. She also touched on numerous subjects, including health care.
Elders served as U.S. Surgeon General under President Bill Clinton from 1993-1994.
