BEEBE TODAY Pancake Supper BEEBE - The Beebe Kiwanis Club will hold its annual Pancake Supper from 5-7 p.m. in the Beebe Schools’ central cafeteria, in conjunction with the Beebe High School last senior high school basketball game. Tickets are $5 for adults and $4 for elementary students. Children under 6 may eat free. Tickets may be purchased at the door or from Kiwanis members, Beebe High School Key Club members, the Beebe Schools Central Office, Simmons First Bank or First Security Bank in Beebe. United Way Appreciation Reception BATESVILLE - The United Way of Independence County will hold an appreciation reception for the 2011 campaign from 4:30-6 p.m. in the George Ryder Room at First Community Bank. Awards will be presented at 5:30 p.m.
The Beginnings of Japanese Food BATESVILLE - Samuel Yamashita, a history professor at Pomona College in California, will present a lecture on the beginnings of Japanese food at 7 p.m. in Derby Lecture Hall at Lyon College. Yamashita recently published Leaves From an Autumn of Emergencies: Selections from the Wartime Diaries of Ordinary Japanese. The free event is open to the public.
Wind Ensemble Concert SEARCY - The Harding University Wind Ensemble, under the direction of Michael Chance, will perform a winter concert at 7 p.m. in the Administration Auditorium. The free concert is open to the public.
TODAY - SATURDAY Greater Tuna SEARCY - Center on the Square Theater will present dinner performances of Greater Tuna on Friday and Saturday and March 2, 3, 9 and 10. A Pizza Playhouse will be held March 1. The doors will open at 6:15 each night, with the dinner buffet opening at 6:30 p.m. and curtain one hour later. Preview Night/Pay What You Can Night will be today. A matinee performance will be March 11, with lunch at 12:30 p.m. and curtain one hour later. Tickets are $27 for dinner and the show and $24 for seniors. The Pizza Playhouse is $18 per person. For the lunch matinee, admission is $24 for lunch and the show and $21 for seniors. FRIDAY EAST Lab Recognition Event BATESVILLE - The University of Arkansas Community College at Batesville will hold a recognition event for area EAST Lab students at 10 a.m. in Independence Hall. The event will allow students an opportunity to showcase their projects to parents, peers, teachers and others.
Scholarship Fundraiser BATESVILLE - Lyon College will hold its first Black Tie Blue Jeans Ball at The Cow Palace at Chimney Rock in Concord. This event is a benefit for student scholarships at Lyon College. A silent auction, cocktails, hors d’oeuvres and photos will begin at 5:30 p.m., followed by dinner at 7 p.m. A live auction will begin at 8 p.m. A dance, featuring Danny Dozier and The Lockhouse Orchestra, will be at 9 p.m. Tickets are $75. Classical Mystery Tour NEWPORT - The Classical Mystery Tour will perform at 7 p.m. with the Memphis Symphony Orchestra at Arkansas State University-Newport. This event, part of the ASU-Newport Patron Series, will feature four musicians performing about 30 of The Beatles’ top tracks. Chamber Trap Tournament BATESVILLE - The Batesville Area Chamber of Commerce will hold the first Chamber Trap Tournament from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Independence County Shooting Sports Complex. Community Orchestra Performance SEARCY - The Harding University-Community Orchestra, under the direction of Michael Chance, will perform at 7 p.m. in the Administration Auditorium. The concert will feature guest violinist Matthew Kiefer in a performance of British composer Ralph Vaughan William’s Lark Ascending. Kiefer is an adjunct instructor of violin at the university and performs regularly with the Memphis Symphony Orchestra, as well as numerous chamber ensembles across the nation. The concert is free and open to the public.
UPCOMING Friends in Great Places Concert BATESVILLE - The fourth annual Friends in Great Places concert will be at 7:30 p.m. March 17 at the University of Arkansas Community College at Batesville. The show will feature Danny Dozer and friends as they pay tribute to bluegrass music and guitarist Chet Atkins. Tickets will go on sale Friday for $10 each and can be purchased at the Batesville Daily Guard, Centennial Bank in Mountain View, Citizens Bank, First Community Bank, Liberty Bank, Southern Bank, UACCB and WRD Entertainment. Proceeds will benefit Kids’ College Scholarships.
Science FictionPlays of Ray Bradbury BEEBE- The Arkansas State University-Beebe and Centennial Bank 2012 Cultural Season will present Dystopiana: The Science Fiction Plays of Ray Bradbury, featuring The Veldt and To the Chicago Abyss, at 7:30 p.m. March 2 and 3 and at 2:30 p.m. March 4 in the Owen Center Theater on the Beebe campus. World Day of Prayer FAIRFIELD BAY - The churches of the Fairfield Bay area will sponsor a World Day of Prayer at 1 p.m. March 2 at Fairfield Bay United Methodist Church, 765 Dave Creek Parkway. This year’s service was written by the women of Malaysia around the theme “Let Justice Prevail.” The World Day of Prayer is a worldwide ecumenical movement of Christian women of many traditions who come together to observe a common day of prayer each year on the first Friday in March.
