River Valley residents receive AGATE awards

— Several educators in the River Valley & Ozark Edition coverage area received awards at the 33rd annual Arkansans for Gifted and Talented Education Conference held Feb.

8-10 in Hot Springs.

The following awards were presented: the AGATE Scholarship to Linor Thomas, Quitman gifted and talented coordinator; the Educator Award to Debra Burris of the University of Central Arkansas; the Curriculum Award to Betsy Hays, Atkins School gifted and talented coordinator; the Affiliate Award to the Atkins Parent Group; and the ACT 56 Certificate of Merit to South Conway County School in Morrilton, Jane Conley, gifted-and-talented coordinator.

The ACT 56 awards were presented by Marilyn Larson of Conway, co-chair of the Governor’s Advisory Council on Gifted and Talented Education.

The conference, held at the Hot Springs Convention Center, was for educators, parents and the community.

The theme was “Putting the Pieces Together.”Robin Clark, Greenbrier gifted and talented coordinator, presided over the conference.

Local presenters included Sally Stuart of Mayflower gifted and talented; Rachelle Brown of Dardanelle gifted and talented; Tommie Sue Anthony of the Arkansas Advanced Initiative for Math and Science; and Alicia Cotabish of Conway.

Arkansans for Gifted and Talented Education is an independent organization that promotes excellence in education, particularly as it relates to gifted and talented children and youth in Arkansas.
