LITTLE ROCK A passenger in a car loaded with a variety of stolen merchandise was hospitalized Tuesday night after swallowing cocaine when a deputy pulled the vehicle over, authorities said.
Robert Griffin, 28, of Jacksonville, told police shortly after being stopped that he swallowed about 2 grams of powder cocaine, which caused his heart to start pounding. He was then admitted to a local hospital for treatment.
Griffin was initially taken into custody when a Pulaski County Sheriff's deputy spotted the Chevrolet Impala he was in traveling at a high rate of speed in the 5100 block of Morning Glory outside North Little Rock.
Inside the vehicle, deputies discovered stolen merchandise including boxes of Hershey bars and peanut butter cups, clothes and video game controllers.
Griffin told investigators he stole some of the items from businesses in Lonoke County and received others from a friend, who he described as a "big thief," according to a report.
Police say Griffin was also in possession of two pipes used for smoking crack cocaine. He is facing charges of obstruction of governmental operations, possession of drug paraphernalia, theft by receiving and tampering with physical evidence. Griffin will reportedly be arrested after being released from the hospital.
The driver, 58-year-old Curtis Riggs, was arrested on charges including driving with a suspended license and theft by receiving.
