— The number of homes sold in Arkansas in December 2011 dipped 6 percent compared to a year earlier, a Realtors group said Thursday.

The Arkansas Realtors Association, which monitors sales in 42 counties in Arkansas, said 1,785 homes were sold in December 2011, down from 1,903 sold in December 2010.

Still, the group said the end-of-year numbers showed some promising signs. Among them, the average prices of homes were up 5 percent from $144,842 in December 2010 to $152,403 in 2011. The group said the total number of homes sold in 2011 was down less than 1 percent from 2010.

Amy Glover Bryant, a spokesman for the association, called the numbers "very encouraging."

“What is important to sustain this recovery are continuing low mortgage interest rates, job creation and a renaissance in American’s belief that the American Dream of home ownership is still possible for them," she said in a news release. " More buyers coming into the market mean additional benefits for the overall economy in Arkansas."

Dana Powell, president of the association, said 2011 was a "rebuilding year."

“The market is showing signs of improvement, and more than ever, people aspire to become homeowners," she said in the release.

It's just going to get worse. Hold on for Armageddon. It's coming. Probably worse than greece.
