Medical marijuana supporters submit petitions

By The Associated Press

This article was published July 5, 2012 at 4:27 p.m.

— Supporters of a proposal to legalize medical marijuana in Arkansas have turned in petitions to try to get on the November ballot, while other measures are waiting until the deadline to submit their signatures.

Arkansans for Compassionate Care submitted 11,000 pages petitions Thursday that they say have 67,885 signatures. The secretary of state’s office will spend the next few days making an initial rough count of the signatures gathered by the group.

To earn a spot on the ballot, the group must submit 62,507 signatures from registered voters. The secretary of state’s office has 30 days to verify the signatures submitted.

Friday is the deadline to submit signatures for ballot measures. Signatures have not been submitted yet for the other five proposals vying for a spot on the ballot.

People..get out and vote for this. This will help many people who are sick and lower the number of prisoners we have. Look at the data from the other fifteen smart states who already have it. Marijuana should be legal anyway why not let people who need it get it legally.

I support this proposal. People with illness should have this option on the table in my opinion.

I am 73, but as I understand it EVERYONE under age 55 is already smoking weed. Why don't you just legalize it for everyone? I have never smoked it, but I don't believe it is as unhealthy or dangerous as alcohol....I have had my share of alcoholics in my life ! THEN JUST ARREST ANYONE WHO IS ACTING IRRESPONSIBLE OR STUPID. I don't think smokers cause near the problems alcohol drinkers do.

Medical marijuana is a joke. Most of its users in California can just get a doctor to write a so-called perscription for anything from a hangnail to a blister for a price. And most who receive it turn around a sell it.

Here's a couple of questions for you. If Arkansas is dumb enough to legalize marijuana, what would the legal age to use it be? If 18 is the age, then the drinking age should be lowered to 18 like it used to be. If it is 21, you will still have illegal trade in marijuana because most of its users are teens. And will marijuana be sold in counties that you cannot purchase alcohol in? If not, you will still have illegal sales. So you really haven't accomplished anything.

I think we should go for full legalization. We don't need government intrusion into what we grow in our garden and consume. This should be a Tea Party issue — that's the group always calling for smaller government.
