UAMS, Mexican Consulate receive Komen grant

— A partnership between the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences and the Mexican Consulate in Little Rock has received a $50,000 grant to promote breast cancer education and screening.

The grant is from Susan G. Komen For The Cure.

UAMS’ Fay W. Boozman College of Public Health has worked with the consulate to provide health education, screening programs and referrals for more than 30,000 visitors annually.

The grant is part of a new pilot program that aims to address disparities in breast cancer mortality rates among Mexican, Mexican-American and Hispanic women. Similar grants were awarded to Mexican consulates in San Diego, Dallas and San Antonio.
