Arkansas achievers

— Thomas Spradley of Little Rock, a sophomore at Hendrix College, has received the John E. Stuckey First Year Chemistry Award at the college’s annual Honors Day Convocation. The award honors the student who has demonstrated outstanding achievement in first-year chemistry courses.

Andrew Crawford of Little Rock, a graduating history major at Hendrix College, received the T.S. Staples History Prize. The award is given annually to the senior history major ranked highest in departmental courses.

Matthew Gammill of Little Rock, a sophomore physics major at Hendrix College, has received the Joe G. Robbins Physics Award. The award recognizes outstanding performance by a student in the second year of physics courses at Hendrix.

Conner McMains of Little Rock, a senior music major at Hendrix College, has received the Robert McGill Choral Music Award. The award is presented to a member of the Hendrix College Choir whose musicality, hard work, dependability and dedication have made an outstanding contribution to the choir.

Linsey Miller of Little Rock, a senior biology major at Hendrix College, has received the Albert M. Raymond AED Award. The award is given to a member of the Alpha Epsilon Delta fraternity entering medical, dental, veterinary or paramedical professional school.

Emily Woodell of Little Rock, a senior philosophy and politics major at Hendrix College, has received the Brandon Matthew Ryan Scholarship in Politics and International Relations. The scholarship is presented to a junior politics or international relations major who best combines a demonstration of aptitude and growth as a student of politics, personal character and leadership traits.

Vincent Simmons, a graduate of Jacksonville High School, has been awarded a Dean’s Scholarship worth $14,500 a year to attend University of the Ozarks beginning with the fall 2012 semester. He is the son of Billy and Diann Simmons.

Mary Jeffries, a history teacher at Bryant Middle School, and Laura West, a history teacher at Hot Springs Intermediate School, were selected as Summer Scholars and participants in South Africa: History and Culture, a five-week institute funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities. The institute is being conducted in South Africa in June and July and includes lectures on various aspects of South African history and culture and visits to historical and cultural sites throughout the country with the goal of allowing participants to develop curriculum materials to use in their classrooms.

Rebecca Schaeffer, a graduate of Henderson State University, has been awarded a James Madison Fellowship by the James Madison Memorial Fellowship Foundation. The fellowships support further study of American history by aspiring experienced teachers of American history, American government or social studies in the nation’s secondary schools. The fellowship will fund up to $24,000 of Schaeffer’s study toward a master’s degree that must include a concentration of courses on the history and principles of the U.S. Constitution. The fellowship also requires that she teach American history or social studies in a secondary school for at least one year for each year of fellowship support.

Arkansas Achievers is an opportunity to give recognition to those for their achievements.
