Nelson to talk on severance-tax proposal

— A former Republican gubernatorial candidate and ex-natural gas executive is planning a news conference this week about a proposed severance-tax increase on natural gas in Arkansas.

Sheffield Nelson is to meet with reporters Tuesday morning to talk about whether the Committee for a Fair Severance Tax plans to continue gathering signatures to get the measure on the November ballot.

Election officials said last week that more than two-thirds of the signatures the group submitted to qualify for the ballot were invalidated.

The secretary of state’s office said that since the proposal cleared an initial count of signatures, backers would have until Aug. 20 to gather more signatures to qualify for the ballot.
