An ordinance making it unlawful for the driver of any motor vehicle to use a cut-out, or other apparatus which will allow the exhaust gases to escape without passing through a suitable silencer, was passed by the City Council at the regular meeting last night. As soon as the muffler cut-out ordinance was passed, Alderman Charles E. Smith made a motion, instructing the city attorney to draft an ordinance regulating the speed of all motor vehicles, stating as his reasons that it was dangerous to pedestrians to have to jump out of the way of automobiles and motorcycles going at a speed of 50 or 60 miles an hour.

HOT SPRINGS - The crystal ball does not reveal a prosperous future for fortune-tellers in Garland County. Three women were charged Tuesday with violating Fortune Telling Privilege Tax Act of 1929, which was revised in 1945. Other arrests are expected.

Gov. Mike Huckabee said Monday that shortening the state’s 60-day duck hunting season could harm the state’s economy and endanger hunters’ safety. State and federal authorities said last week they probably would have to limit the 60-day season to stabilize the declining duck population. Concerned residents of Stuttgart and surrounding eastern Arkansas are seeking a compromise with a reduced daily bag limit in exchange for another 60-day season.
