MOUNTAIN HOME — Five members of the Baxter County Quorum Court have filed a lawsuit against the county to stop a proposed special election for a sales-tax increase.
The group is opposed to a proposed special election for a tax increase to fund the acquisition of the NABORS Landfill and Hauling Service and the Baxter County landfill.
The Baxter Bulletin reports that revenue from the 3/8-cent tax would support a $22.6 million bond issue.
Opponents argue that Baxter County should not be in the landfill business and that Ozark Mountain Solid Waste District should sell the operation to a private operator.
But NABORS director Frank Kaye said petitions calling for an election have already been certified and that the Quorum Court has no choice in setting the election.
