NLR ad-board chief Trevino set to resign

9-year veteran taking teaching job

— Karen Trevino, North Little Rock’s executive director for its Advertising and Promotion Commission, told commissioners Monday that she is resigning effective Aug. 15.

The commission tentatively agreed to have a special meeting Aug. 1 to set its job search process because two directors were absent Monday.

Trevino, hired nine years ago, is taking a full-time position with Pulaski Technical College in North Little Rock as a hospitality instructor, she said. Her annual salary at the commission is $62,000.

“I’ve loved this job more than I can tell you,” she told commissioners. “It’s been very rewarding. ... It has been an amazing experience.”

Trevino offered to continue at the Visitors Bureau part time to oversee accounting duties to help reduce the workload of a new director that has also included duties for personnel decisions, advertising, marketing, tourism development and recording collections of restaurant and hotel taxes.

North Little Rock charges a 3 percent tax on the sale of prepared food and a 2 percent tax on hotel room rentals.

“There are several options we can consider,” said city Alderman Charlie Hight, who is a commission member. “We’ll need to work out what’s the best direction to go that’s in the best interest of the city.”

The commission oversees city restaurant and hotel operations, the Riverside RV Park and North Little Rock Visitors Bureau in Burns Park that advertises city attractions and activities. The commission’s annual budget is $1.05 million.
