— 100 YEARS AGO July 25, 1912 SEARCY - Frank Owens was found guilty in White County Circuit Court today of disturbing the peace during July, 1911, and was fined $5. The costs were heavy, and when the verdict was read the boy began crying, and said he had no money and offered to give the sheriff his note, which was refused. Judge Lankford, who is holding court, told the sheriff he would sign the note, which he did, and the boy was released.

50 YEARS AGO July 25, 1962

Little Rock pubic schools will have the largest number of students attending integrated schools since desegregation began in 1957.Seventy-eight Negro students will attend formerly all-white schools. This is 30 more than attended integrated schools last year. The Little Rock School Board announced yesterday reassignment of one Negro from an all-Negro school to a predominantly white one, completing preparations for the fall term.

25 YEARS AGO July 25, 1987

The final results are in.A total of 1,354 people took the state’s controversial basic skills teacher competency test during the past three years, but never passed it. The number amounts to 3.6 percent of the total 37,326 people who took the three-part exam in mathematics, reading and writing since March 1985. The last test was administered May 30 of this year. Teachers who did not pass the test, which was mandated for all practicing teachers, are ineligible to renew their state teaching certificates when they expire.

10 YEARS AGO July 25, 2002

Attorneys for black students ended their case against the Little Rock School District on Wednesday with testimony from a member of the Little Rock Nine who said he found a “compliance mentality” - a focus not on students but getting out of court. The Little Rock district also completed its defense by late afternoon, maintaining it had followed its 1998 desegregation plan and has earned release from more than four decades of federal court supervision of district operations.
