The muffler cut-out ordinance was signed by Mayor Taylor yesterday afternoon, and, according to the provisions of the ordinance, went into effect immediately. Chief of Police Fred M. Cogswell stated last night that possibly two days will be allowed the automobile drivers to get into line with the requirements of the measure, and that the motorcycle policeman will again be in evidence to see that the provisions of the ordinance are complied with.

Earlier this year 10 lobbyists plopped down $5,000 each for a weekend of hunting and fishing with U.S. House Speaker Jim Wright in Lafayette County - several hundred dollars more than the county’s average annual per-capita income. Lafayette County’s pastoral qualities, though appealing to outdoorsmen with political ties, have not prevented it from being the poorest county in Southwest Arkansas, and one of the poorest in the state. “Third World” is the label Randy Lee, the chief county health official, uses to describe some of the living conditions. Of the county’s 10,300 residents, 32 percent live below the poverty level, the seventh highest rate in the state.

10 YEARS AGO July 26, 2002 ASH FLAT - Construction will begin this winter on a $1.2 million community college satellite campus here, following voters’ overwhelming approval of a citywide 3/8th percent sales tax to fund the project. The tax, approved by a 133-14 vote Tuesday, should generate $180,000 a year, said James Fenton, development officer for the Ozarka College Sharp County Learning Center. The anticipated revenue will fund construction of classrooms, a computer lab, video center and a 150-seat lecture hall.
