— TRACK AND FIELD Booth going into Hall of Fame

Dick Booth, an Arkansas assistant coach for a combined 27 years during two stints, is being inducted into the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Hall of Fame it was announced Wednesday.

Booth, who coaches field events, is going into his second year as an Alabama assistant. He also was an assistant at Florida for two years after leaving Arkansas and was Louisiana-Lafayette’s head coach between his stints at Arkansas.

“An honor like this doesn’t sink in for a while,” Booth said in a news release. “But I’ve been extremely blessed in my career to work with tremendous athletes that possess great work ethic.”

Booth has coached 49 NCAA individual champions, 11 Olympians and 153 All-Americans during his career. He will be enshrined in the Hall of Fame in December during the annual coaches’ convention.

  • Bob Holt BASEBALL Hendrix coach resigns

Hendrix Coach R.J. Thomas resigned Wednesday to take a similar position at Southwestern University in Georgetown, Texas.

Thomas compiled a 108-132-1 record in six seasons at Hendrix. He led the Warriors to a program-record 22 victories in 2009 and captured the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Tournament championship, advancing to the NCAA Division III Tournament.

LR team advances to World Series

Conner Cline’s two-run home run in the seventh inning gave Little Rock Junior Deputy a 6-5 victory over Tri-County (Texas) on Tuesday to win the Southwest Regional championship, advancing to the Cal Ripken World Series in Aberdeen, Md.

Reliever Jonathan Herbert allowed 1 run on 4 hits and struck out 5 in 5 innings to earn the victory.

Hudson Oliver was named tournament MVP, batting .667. He also pitched 14 innings in five games.

Little Rock will play New England at 4 p.m. Aug. 11.

FOOTBALL Youth league looking for players

The Arkansas Christian Youth Athletic League is seeking children 5-17 and coaches for its football and cheerleading programs.
