— BREWERS GM: Greinke available

After a rough road trip seemingly knocked the Milwaukee Brewers out of contention, General Manager Doug Melvin acknowledges that the team is fielding trade inquiries for ace pitcher Zack Greinke.

“I think people know that,” Melvin said Thursday.

Melvin confirmed Greinke’s availability in comments to USA Today and Milwaukee’s WTMJ radio earlier Thursday.

Melvin did not go into detail on how many teams have expressed interest in the 2009 AL Cy Young Award winner, saying only that the trade market always heats up with the July 31 nonwaiver trade deadline approaching.

TWINS

Swarzak to DL

MINNEAPOLIS - The Minnesota Twins have placed right-handed reliever Anthony Swarzak on the 15-day disabled list with a right rotator cuff strain.

The move was made Thursday. To take Swarzak’s place, right-hander Luis Perdomo’s contract will be selected from Class AAA Rochester. To make room for Perdomo on the 40-man roster, right-hander Carl Pavano will be transferred to the 60-day disabled list.

Pavano already has missed 52 days because of a right shoulder injury, so this won’t extend his absence by much. He recently began throwing off a mound.

Perdomo started with Class AA New Britain and was promoted to Rochester. He has a 2.14 ERA in 59 innings with 61 strikeouts this season between the two teams. Perdomo would be the 41st player to appear in a game this year for the Twins.

ORIOLES

LHP Eveland recalled

BALTIMORE - The Baltimore Orioles have recalled left-hander Dana Eveland from Class AAA Norfolk to fortify their overworked bullpen.

Eveland arrived Thursday morning, less than 24 hours after Manager Buck Showalter used five relievers in a 10-1 loss to Tampa Bay. Starter Miguel Gonzalez didn’t make it out of the third inning, leaving Showalter in need of a long man for Thursday’s afternoon game against the Rays.

Eveland went 0-1 with a 4.73 ERA in 14 games with the Orioles from May 11-July 15.

To clear room for Eveland on the roster,Baltimore optioned infielder Steve Tolleson to Norfolk. Tolleson hit .194 with 2 home runs and 6 RBI in 23 games during three stints with the Orioles this season.

MLB

Bonds requests delay

SAN FRANCISCO - Barry Bonds has requested another delay in his appeal of his obstruction of justice conviction.

Bonds’ lawyers asked the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals on Thursday to postpone the deadline for his reply brief from Aug. 2 to Aug. 16.

A jury found Bonds guilty in April 2011 of one count of obstruction of justice, finding he gave an evasive answer in 2003 to a grand jury investigating illegal steroids distribution. The trial jury deadlocked on three counts of making false statements, charges which then were dropped.

Major League Baseball’s career home run leader was sentenced in December to 30 days of house arrest, two years of probation and a $4,000 fine.

His initial brief was due March 21 and the government’s response on April 20, but both sides obtained extensions.
