Audit of Memphis police property room finds issues

— An audit of the Memphis Police Department’s property and evidence room found that too many employees had the power to delete information from the electronic property log.

The city’s internal audit team found the operations at the property and evidence room were satisfactory with room for improvement.

The Commercial Appeal reported that the audit found 10 instances in which employees improper access to delete information from the records.

The audit recommended that the department change its logs to read-only files that can be viewed, but not altered.

In 2004, a former employee at the property room was sentenced to prison for taking more than $1 million and cocaine from the property room.
