LITTLE ROCK — The website Housecarers.com, “a place for housesitters to advertise and match up with homeowners,” suggests that the standard arrangement is for rent-free accommodation in exchange for sitting.
The website itself charges $50 annually for sitters who wish to post a profile.
Travel expenses are normally borne by the housesitter.
“Many retirees and travelers are more than happy with obtaining rent-free accommodation in exchange for housesitting. Many travelers and retirees have been successful and grateful for obtaining housesits in foreign countries,” says the website.
A homeowner’s insurance policy that might protect a house guest’s personal belongings may treat a housesitter more like a tenant, who would need his own insurance. Check with your insurer to see who’s covered.
