Teams, backers are honored for fighting juvenile diabetes

— Team captains and sponsors for the Sept. 15 Central Arkansas JDRF Walk to Cure Diabetes were treated to lunch July 18 in the Great Hall of the Governor’s Mansion.

After lunch, Greater Arkansas Chapter Executive Director R. Renay Dean spoke about the nonprofit Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation’s main goals to cure, treat and prevent the disease.

Jeff Hankins, the 5K (3.1-mile) walk’s corporate chairman, explained his support for the organization, saying the money goes to the best researchers in the world and the foundation is very cost effective with 80 percent of money raised going toward research.

Hallie Calvin, a team captain who has helped raise more than $234,000 with a family team and teams through her work at Centennial Bank, gave fundraising tips, including one she considered very important: “Say thank you, and say it often.”
