LR hits 110, sets new daily heat record

— The official temperature for Little Rock has reached a daily record of 110 degrees.

Julie Lesko, meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Little Rock confirmed the new high, which was reached at 2:04 p.m.

Currently, the temperature is the third hottest day in Arkansas history, tying with several other days. It is also the hottest day of 2012 so far, Lesko said.

The National Weather Service said Monday the previous record was 108 degrees in 1986.

Lesko said that while the temperature could get a few degrees hotter, those in the city will have to wait and see. A dry air loft could cause temperatures to warm up rapidly as they have for the majority of Monday.

But temperatures often plateau earlier in the afternoon in extremely hot conditions, Chris Buonanno, science and operations officer for the weather service in North Little Rock, said, so the high likely won't rise more than a couple degrees before falling overnight.

Temperatures Tuesday are expected to be well above average again.

"It'll be in the same ballpark so to speak," Buonanno said, noting it's too early to say if they'll eclipse today's heat. "But it'll be hot tomorrow. Definitely."
