— 100 YEARS AGO July 30, 1912

“Chimmie” O’Brien, the erstwhile leader of the “dirty dozen,” and intimate with the interior arrangement of the city jail, by virtue of many sojourns there, yesterday entered into a compact with the city officials, to the effect on his part that he would be good until September 1. In consideration of a permit to shine shoes in Little Rock without the payment of the city license fee, “Chimmie” agreed to obey all rules and ordinances of the city of Little Rock, and further agreed that if he fails to abide by the terms of the compact, his permit shall be revoked.

50 YEARS AGO July 30, 1962

The Arkansas State Medical Society is making an effort to get all county medical societies in Arkansas to conduct mass immunization campaigns against polio simultaneously with the Pulaski County effort, which begins Sept. 23. Dr. John McCullough Smith, president of the Pulaski group and public relations committee chairman for the state society, said he would contact Dr. King Wade of Hot Springs, state society president, to further discuss the matter today.

25 YEARS AGO July 30, 1987

Some elementary teachers in the Little Rock School District may be reassigned to new schools in the 1986-87 school year as the result of an order issued Tuesday by U.S. District Judge Henry Woods. Woods, in a letter to the district’s attorneys, said some of the faculties at the schools are predominantly white and he didn’t understand how or why teachers were assigned to schools in such a manner.

The University of Central Arkansas in Conway and Lyon College in Batesville have received $200,000 grants toward strengthening their basic science academic programs, the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences has announced. The grants are from the Arkansas Biomedical Research Infrastructure Network, a collaborative program that includes UAMS, the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville, and the University of Arkansas at Little Rock. The grants will include money for new faculty recruitment and training toward the creation of research programs.
