LITTLE ROCK — The Arkansas Department of Education, in partnership with the Arkansas Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development and the Common Core State Standards Guiding Coalition, is hosting public forums this afternoon on new national standards for math and English/language arts.
“Connecting the Common Core and the Community for the Whole Child: A Community Conversation,” will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. at sites throughout the state to present information on the new, more challenging educational standards.
The standards are now the basis for instruction in kindergarten through second grades in the state’s public school system. Their use will be expanded to the third through eighth grades in 2012-13 and ninth through 12th grades in 2013-14.
The standards are designed to improve student preparation for college and careers.
The sessions will be held at the following locations:
