Group seeking money for courthouse roof fix

— Friends of the Garland County Courthouse, formed in 2011 to raise money to repair the leaky courthouse roof, plans fundraising events to offset the reconstruction cost.

French Architects of Hot Springs, retained by the Garland County Quorum Court for the repair project design work, estimates that repairing the four-section roof of the Garland County Court House will cost about $248,271.25.

Fundraising events include a countywide yard sale at Hot Springs Memorial Field from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on May 5, and a two-day festival called “Pioneer Days” Oct. 19-20 at the Garland County Fairgrounds, said Mary Bournival, the organization’s cochairman.

Revenue also has come from the sale of prints of the oak tree in front of the courthouse on Ouachita Avenue. Bournival said about 50 of the prints have been sold at $225 each.

The Trash to Treasure yard sale will offer 20-by-20 foot spaces for $35 each.

The Pioneer Days event will have four levels of sponsorship:

One presenting sponsor, $10,000. Their name and logo will go in all advertising in signs at the event’s main entry. The presenting sponsor will be entitled to four booth spaces at the historic event.

Two sponsors, $5,000. Their names will receive prominent placement on printed ads and signs. The two $5,000 sponsors will be entitled to three booth spaces each.

Five sponsors, $2,500. They will be acknowledged in event advertising and entitled to two booth spaces and signs.

Unlimited sponsors, $1,000. The will be entitled to one booth space each at the event.

Th e ro of re n ovat i o n would occur in several stages, according to French Architects.

Roof one work involves removing the existing roof, installing new tapered insulation, re-using copper coping and installing new membrane roofing and aluminum-based flashing, at an estimated cost of $37,400. Roof one is over the Garland County clerk’s office.

Roof two work involves removing the existing roof, installing new tapered insulation, copper tail flashing, membrane roofing, aluminum-based and prefinished metal downspouts, at a total estimated cost of $113,300.

Roof two is the main roof, and the largest span. The project will include waterproofing. This part of the project will involve removing the roof’s purge coat, patching loose areas and applying coats of elastometric coating to the top and back of the parapet walls at a total estimated cost of $52,250.

Roof three work is similar to that of roof two, at an estimated cost of $10,000.

Roof three is a small section between the original courthouse and the courthouse annex built several years ago.

Roof four repair work is comparable to roofs two and three and is estimated to cost about $18,000. Roof four covers the Garland County circuit clerk’s office.
