Museum receives tile from Jefferson Davis’ home

— A roof tile that was part of Jefferson Davis’ retirement home in Mississippi has been donated to a museum in Batesville.

Phil Cargill, who lives near Pfeiffer, says he visited Beauvoir in Biloxi, Miss., and learned the tiles were available. He received a tile from the Confederate president’s great-great grandson, who also signed the tile and gave him a letter of authenticity.

Cargill tells the Batesville Guard that he decided to donate the tile to the Old Independence Regional Museum.

Beauvoir was damaged during Hurricane Katrina, and the roof’s tiles had to be replaced because of the restoration. Beauvoir serves as the Jefferson Davis Museum and Presidential Library.
