State trooper wounded in Hempstead County shooting

A state trooper was wounded last night during a gunfire exchange at a traffic stop in Hempstead County, according to Arkansas State Police.

Corporal Pete Penney, 37, reported that he was conducting a traffic stop along U.S. Highway 278 between Ozan and Nashville around 9 p.m. Friday night.

Ten minutes later he called requesting assistance and reported that shots had been fired, according to the report from state police.

A Nashville police officer, who responded to the scene, found Penney and the driver of the car, Herman Lee White, 66, of Hope, both wounded.

Penney was taken to a hospital in Hot Springs, where he is in stable condition. White was taken to a Texarkana hospital. He is also in stable condition.

After White is released from the hospital, he will be incarcerated pending the filing of formal charges from the shooting incident.

State police are investigating the incident.
