Arkansas superintendent wins national educator award

Teachers from Arkansas and California have been named winners of the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development’s 2012 Outstanding Young Educator Award.

Matt McClure is superintendent of Cross County Schools in Cherry Valley and is credited with improving student achievement in his rural district. McClure also has instituted daily physical fitness classes, student tutoring and homework help.

The other winner is Liliana Aguas of Leconte Elementary School in Berkeley, Calif. She is being honored for promoting a sense of community in her classroom and creating activities such as creative writing, reader’s theater and multi-cultural literature exploration.

Both McClure and Aguas will receive a $10,000 cash award and an ASCD institutional membership.
